Former University of Alabama and NFL quarterback A.J. McCarron said he is ending his campaign for Alabama lieutenant governor, less than two months after he announced his candidacy.

In a press release Wednesday, McCarron said he planned “to accept a new career opportunity in football.”

“My football position will require the same 100% focus, commitment and attention that I was prepared to give to the office of lieutenant governor, so it is time to end my campaign,” the statement said.

McCarron announced his candidacy in October, using culture war language and referring to the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk in a video on YouTube.

He said it was time for a new cadre of politicians, newcomers and outside candidates, to take the lead and enter political office.
