Walker County has prepared in advance for potential winter storms with the purchase of appropriate material and equipment to respond quickly to snow events, according to Board of Commissioners Chair Angie Teems.

“Winter has already gotten to us,” Teems said during her monthly report at the Dec. 4 board meeting.

The county has purchased 22 tons of sand to deploy for traction on icy roads in addition to more than 880 50-pound bags of salt used to help melt snow to later be plowed, according to Joe Legge, Walker County’s public relations director. The eight multipurpose trucks the county owns have been serviced, ready for any necessary deployment.

There is no system in place to pretreat roads for incoming winter storms, so the county, in the face of snow events, will have public works teams on standby, ready to go once snow falls or icing begins, Legge said by phone.
