It’s only March, and early March at that, but Tennessee’s top-ranked softball team has a chance to make program history this week.

Karen Weekly’s Lady Volunteers completed a sweep of 17th-ranked LSU on Sunday afternoon with a dramatic 8-5 victory at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium to improve to 23-0. Tennessee has never started a season 25-0 but could accomplish that feat by defeating Austin Peay on Tuesday in Columbia, Tennessee, and by downing Lipscomb on Wednesday in Nashville.

Tennessee’s 23 wins to this point include nine triumphs over ranked teams, including the three over LSU (17-7) in the opening Southeastern Conference series for both teams.

“I think we’ve done a good job of playing the game pitch to pitch and staying locked in and trusting the process,” Weekly said Sunday on the SEC Network broadcast. “We’re not trying to let things get too big.”

The Lady Vols trailed LSU 4-0 both Saturday and Sunday, falling behind 4-0 in the first inning Saturday before using a six-run third inning to build a 7-4 lead on their way to an 11-6 win. Gabby Leach went 4-for-4 Saturday with two home runs and three RBIs.
