Millie Fox understands the type of work ethic required to excel on the diamond.

After all, the Chattanooga Christian School sophomore has watched her three older sisters go on to play big-time college softball for power conference programs such as North Carolina and Tennessee.

Now she’s one win away from bringing home prep softball state championship No. 5 for the Fox sisters and a second straight TSSAA Division II-AA title for the Lady Chargers, who battled to a 3-1 victory over Chattanooga rival GPS in the classification’s winners-bracket final Thursday at Cedar Stone Park in Smyrna.

CCS (28-8-1) can extend its reign with a win against Baylor (25-10-2) at 11 a.m. Eastern on Friday at Middle Tennessee State University. With the Lady Chargers 2-0 at this year’s Spring Fling, they need just one victory against the Lady Red Raiders, who would need to beat CCS twice in the tournament’s double-elimination format that extends to the title round. A second game, if necessary, is set for 5 p.m. at MTSU.

The Lady Red Raiders lost 11-2 to CCS in Tuesday’s opening round, but they have bounced back while facing elimination twice since then. After rain washed out much of Wednesday’s action, Baylor was busy Thursday, posting an 11-1 run-rule victory in six innings against Knoxville Catholic before beating GPS 8-1. Rylee Jasper and Adi Wallington shined in the pitching circle in both wins with seven strikeouts apiece.
