Thank you for printing the article by Terry Mattingly (8/23) on the apparent decline of church choirs, as praise bands are seeming to take over. Churches that no longer use choral singing are missing something significant in ministry opportunity. Choral music offers a particular form of worship, an element of beauty, intergenerational connection and a sense of purpose for those who participate. Our own also serves as a small group within the church where members pray together and encourage one another, as we sing anthems and hymns with beautiful and uplifting content.
What are the limiting factors? Lack of time, fear that some cannot read music, finding leaders and accompanists. All these can be overcome with the right enthusiasm and commitment. And children’s choirs are so important; where else will kids get musical education based on God’s word? Our church kids are participating in large numbers now, thanks to a few talented teachers. And they are having fun — with plenty of time left for other things.
I trust and hope that church choirs are making a comeback. They are good for the soul.
