Dear Abby: Self-centered grandmother alienates entire family
DEAR ABBY: I have a mother-in-law of 30 years I distance myself from. I do this in order to maintain my sanity.
DEAR ABBY: I have a mother-in-law of 30 years I distance myself from. I do this in order to maintain my sanity.
DEAR ABBY: I'm 56 years old and have been married for 12 years. I don't want to drive an hour and a half to…

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I have been married for 35 years. The week we were to celebrate our 34th anniversary, he invited a female friend to our vacation home for an overnight rendezvous.

DEAR ABBY: A friend of mine calls first or pops by every few months. She's generous and brings homemade treats, something she has found at the grocer's or flowers from her garden. We have great chats, and I really like her. The problem is, she always brings her little dog, whom she calls the most "wonderful little doggie in the world." He goes into all the rooms and jumps on the beds, couch, needlepoint chairs, etc. The last time she was here, I had to launder two bedspreads and clean the couch because it was muddy outside. When I spoke up and said maybe his feet were muddy, she said she had wiped his feet. Obviously not. I don't want her dog here anymore. I have a patio where we can visit, and I can direct her and the dog there when the weather is good, but what do I say in the meantime when she appears at my door with her dog? -- DISGRUNTLED IN MICHIGAN

DEAR ABBY: Our dear mother passed away 2 1/2 years ago, which was very sad for me and my three siblings.

DEAR ABBY: A former boyfriend, "Ray," is an alcoholic. He has been through rehab twice, but it didn't do any good.

DEAR ABBY: To help out his parents, I pick up my grandson from day care two days a week. I recently started taking him to a local park for about 45 minutes before I take him home. I'm physically active and climb the slides, chase him around and play with him. He loves our time together.

DEAR ABBY: My niece-in-law, "Justine," is a few years younger than my husband and I. We have been best friends for the last 25 years. She's 55 and divorced, with a grown daughter but no man in her life. She's extremely lonely and has only us as emotional support.

DEAR ABBY: I'm a member of Alcoholics Anonymous. A fellow AA member suffered critical injuries in a motorcycle accident recently and had been in the ICU for several weeks. I visited the hospital regularly, bringing cookies and offering support to his girlfriend, who is also in the program.

DEAR ABBY: Why do I feel the need to be in a relationship, but when I'm in one, I feel trapped, bored, disappointed and lonely? I'm a divorced single mom, co-parenting a child with my ex. We have been divorced for 15 years. My child is graduating from college this year.
