Surprises happen every week on the high school football field, and the Times Free Press staff is all over them. Here are four notable surprises from this past week's action:
Prior to her senior season of high school soccer in 1995, Gretchen Hammel was moved to the defensive end of Grace Academy's formation.
A trio of seniors stepped up in a big way to help lead East Hamilton to their first district baseball championship since 2015.
Dalton High School's bid for a third consecutive state championship in boys' soccer was thwarted Friday night, when Lassiter rallied from an early deficit to win the GHSA Class AAAAAA title match.
Monday's nondistrict softball game with Walker Valley seemed like a walk in the park for East Hamilton after scoring six runs in the third inning and carrying a 7-0 lead into the sixth, but the visitors made it interesting before falling 8-7.
Northwest Whitfield made it a sweep for Region 7-AAAA in the first round of the GHSA baseball playoffs with Thursday night's win at Fayette County.
The work Silverdale Baptist Academy's baseball team has done indoors is certainly transferring out onto the field.
The final day of the regular season for GHSA baseball programs was packed with major playoff implications and, for the most part, teams in favorable situations survived.
Rafe Montgomery's senior year of high school has been everything he has asked for and more.
Heritage entered Tuesday night's opening game of the season-ending Region 7-AAAA series against first-place Cedartown in dire need of a win.
Down to their last four outs and in danger of losing two of three games to rival Trion in a key GHSA Region 6-A public baseball series late in the regular season, the Gordon Lee Trojans found some two-out magic Friday night.
