Walker schools launch

FLINTSTONE, Ga. – Theresa Arthur went around the cafeteria at Chattanooga Valley Middle School enthusiastically clapping her hands to rouse bleary-eyed students for a new breakfast program on the first day of school.

“When the bell rings, you can get in line to grab breakfast and take it to your classes,” Arthur said cheerily. She is the Walker County Schools food services manager.

On cue, about 70 of the middle-schoolers hit the breakfast line for a choice of cereal, chicken biscuits, breakfast bars, fruits, a variety of milk and fruit juices and then headed to class to eat.

Walker County on Monday launched Breakfast on the Go, a systemwide program that provides a grab-and-go breakfast students can take to their first class of the day, county coordinator of food services Michelle Coker said.

Breakfast is 30 cents for students who qualify for reduced prices and $1 otherwise.
