Bucs’ Montgomery new Central coach

Sam Montgomery has been hired as head football coach at Central High School. Montgomery, who was offensive line coach at Boyd-Buchanan last season, takes over for David Barger, who recently resigned to return to Lake County.

“David had approached me before about joining his staff as an assistant,” Montgomery said. “He did a fantastic job here and I was intrigued, but I loved it at Boyd. But this is a chance to better my family as a head coach. After meeting with the administration at Central, I knew this was a place I could be for a long time.

“Having worked with guys like Ken Colquette, Wes Green, Dan Duff and Grant Reynolds, they really helped prepare me for this situation. We have about a week left in spring practice that we will work on the building blocks of what we want to do.”

Montgomery was chosen from a list of more than 20 applicants, according to Central principal Finley King. He was an assistant at Marion County for one year and an assistant at Whitwell for two years before taking over as head coach for one year, directing a 4-6 season in 2007.

The offensive line was one of the strong points during Boyd-Buchanan’s run to the Class 2A state championship game last season.

“The people who I spoke with at Boyd-Buchanan told me it would be a big loss for them and a gain for us,” King said. “We really wanted to find someone who would bring consistency to the program.

“We are very pleased with everything we learned during the process about Coach Montgomery and feel like he is definitely the right man for the job. Everybody involved had a very positive impression about his football knowledge, but just as important, we feel like he is someone who will build young men.”
