Wrigley’s Mints will soon leave by rail

Wint-O-Green and orange Life Savers mints are rolling off the line at Wrigley Co.’s expanded Chattanooga facility.

Soon those products and supplies for the plant will be more easily transported in and out by rail, due in part to a state $409,244 infrastructure improvement pass-through grant unanimously approved by Hamilton County Commission on Thursday.

“We’re anxious to start our rail spur,” said Wrigley’s Bruce VerBurg.

The facility’s expansion, which was announced this summer, is already under way. At capacity, the project will add 54 new jobs in the $48,900 to $69,000 annual wage range, the resolution states.

The site will be at full capacity in the next few months, VerBurg told commissioners Thursday.
