Phone Smarts

On remote trails, many times it’s a miracle to have cell phone service. But don’t leave that iPhone behind just because you can’t Instagram your adventure. Filling your phone with useful non-data using items can save your life-if not some time-on the trails. Take a picture of a map of the trail system you’re on for an easy way to navigate. Keep a list of emergency contacts in your phone in case something happens. It’s also wise to text someone before your run to let them know what you’re doing and when you will be back. In the event that you’re bitten by a snake, try to quickly snap a photo of it (if you don’t know which species it is) to show medics later on. Your phone can also double as a light source with its handy and powerful flashlight. We wouldn’t recommend relying on it, but some phones have a compass built in, as well. Before your run, download an app with a whistle sound (or use a similar sounding ringtone) to help communicate in the event of an emergency.

As we hit the trails in the beautifully cool weather this fall, our usual quick runs can turn to hours-long adventures. But apart from the things runners and hikers always need when they brave the outdoors-hydration, nutrition, navigation, first aid and a light source-it may be a good idea to pack a few other small items into your running pack in case time gets away from you. After all, it’s a ripe time for exploring trails, and no one wants to stay in the woods overnight without a plan.

We picked up a few tips from the women at Rock/Creek’s Women’s Trail Summit about what minimalist items they pack to keep them happy (and safe!) on the trails.

Salt Stick

That first long run of the season may be harder than expected-we all know how that goes. But the difference between running on the road and in the woods? Isolation. Debilitating cramps and dehydration pain could spell the end of your run and mean more time in the woods. Salt Stick is an electrolyte capsule that will help curb cramps and fight off sickness during those runs. Try: Salt Stick, $20 for 100 capsules, available at Rock/Creek.
