A new year brings new opportunities and more races for the cyclists and mountain bikers of Chattanooga, but not everyone is ready.

The holidays can hit pretty hard and bog down our training. Or perhaps you’re interested in getting into cycling, but the workout and gear expectations have you a little intimidated. Don’t fear, though. Here are some tips that will help you revitalize your training regimen to get you prepared for the upcoming races.

COOL OFF BEFORE THE FIRST RACE

Nothing is more important for a race than going into it with fresh legs, ready to tear up the road or mountain. As such, your training program before the race should change. Ease into the week, with light speed and endurance training. Through the middle of the week, train hard at whatever the race will expect of you. Lots of climbing? Practice endurance climbing. Lots of flat ground? Work on maintaining stamina and speed. In the days preceding the race, switch back to lighter training while throwing a few sprints in to keep your muscles and lungs fresh.
