The Times Free Press received seven awards in the Tennessee Associated Press journalism contest.

Reporter Zack Peterson was named newspaper journalist of the year and photographer Doug Strickland received a first-place award for individual achievement in photography.

Columnist Mark Wiedmer and reporter Mark Pace received a first-place award in the sports-outdoors category.

The Tennessee Associated Press News Excellence Awards were held Saturday in Nashville and recognized work done in 2018. Middle Tennessee State University’s School of Journalism sponsors the contest.

Second-place awards went to Pam Sohn for editorial writing; Robin Rudd for sports photography; Pace for investigative reporting; and Strickland for spot news photography.

Peterson was honored for work using public records to document inappropriate behavior by law enforcement officers at various local departments. Pace’s investigative work centered on a Chattanooga police officer who was accused of rapes that were not investigated.
