A Red Bank High School student was arrested Wednesday after a handgun was confiscated from the student.

Another student reported to personnel at the school that the suspected student had a weapon at school, prompting the school’s resource officer to investigate and recover the weapon from the suspected student.

The student in possession of the firearm was arrested and transported to the Juvenile Detention Center. The student was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds and theft/possession of stolen property.

Students were kept in their classrooms while the search was underway, but the school was not under any sort of lockdown, according to Hamilton County Schools spokesman Tim Hensley.

Hensley did not provide details of the type of weapon that was found. He directed those questions to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Department, which later identified the weapon as a handgun.
