McCallie’s golf team held a one-stroke lead after Thursday’s opening round at the TSSAA Division II-AA state tournament, and its score in the final round was even lower.
That wasn’t enough as Ensworth dominated Friday at Sevierville Golf Club, and what would have been the Blue Tornado’s first team state title since 2011 — and fourth overall — instead became their fourth runner-up finish in that span.
All four scoring players for Ensworth were under par in the final round as the Tigers won the 36-hole event at 4-under 572. They shaved 14 strokes off their opening round with a 279 on Friday, when McCallie’s 290 was two better than the day before.
That left the Blue Tornado 10 behind despite top-10 finishes from three players. Thad Whitfield closed with a 2-under 70 to tie for fourth at 142, with Carter Sayman (75) sharing seventh at 144 and Charles Warren (69) sharing ninth at 145.
Baylor finished third at 589, with Viktor Stollinger alone in third after back-to-back 70s and Guillame Paquette sharing fourth with consecutive 71s. The Red Raiders had won the past two titles and three of the past four, with Ensworth the 2019 champ.
