ATLANTA — Brent Key said he and his staff studied video of at least 21 schools as he prepared for the Georgia Tech football team’s 2023 season opener against Louisville, which will bring a new head coach, Jeff Brohm, and a transfer quarterback, Jack Plummer, to Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Friday night.

One bit of video stood out to Key: a clip of Tech’s 26-21 win at Pittsburgh last October, the first contest of his eight-game stint leading his alma mater on an interim basis.

“I saw myself on the sideline and was like, ‘Whoa, we have come a long way since then,'” Key said of the Yellow Jackets.

For one thing, he is now simply the head coach, with Tech removing the interim label last Nov. 29. That was three days after the Jackets wrapped up a 5-7 season that included a 4-4 mark under Key, including road wins over two AP Top 25 teams, No. 24 Pittsburgh and No. 13 North Carolina.

Tech’s coach a year ago at this time was Geoff Collins, who was dismissed after a 1-3 start to his fourth season and with a 10-28 overall record at Tech.
