Sales of new Chattanooga-built ID.4 electric SUVs rose more than 60% in the third quarter versus the same period a year ago, according to Volkswagen of America.

VW posted sales of the EV of 10,707 vehicles in the quarter, which sped past the Atlas Cross Sport SUV, also made in Chattanooga, which came in at 8,821 units in the period, the automaker reported Tuesday. The quarter marked the first time ID.4 sales topped 10,000 in the United States in a three-month period, figures show.

But ID.4 sales still trail the Atlas SUV, the third vehicle assembled at the Enterprise South industrial park factory that employs 5,000 workers, which posted 16,087 units sold in the quarter.

Production of the ID.4 began in Chattanooga in mid-2022. Before that, the vehicle was imported from Germany.
