The Chattanooga Public Works Department unveiled changes to its brush pickup policy at the city council on Tuesday.

The city is moving away from a calendar schedule system that required residents to leave brush piles for pickup at an undetermined time. The city will now ask residents to request pickups through 311, either by calling, emailing 311@chattanooga.gov or submitting a service request through the 311 app.

The call-in model is used for bulk trash pickup, according to information shown to council members Tuesday evening, and will go into effect Aug. 12.

Residents who request pickups through 311 will be given an estimated pickup time, which will limit the amount of time brush sits on curbs.

“Under the previous system, the city organized its brush collection process into four distinct areas, each with its dedicated truck that would continuously operate within that area, leaving residents uncertain of their collection day,” said a press release shown to the council. “Now residents will be given a collection time of one to eight business days for collection of brush and bulk trash… Bulk trash pickup was recently changed to on-demand, and this change resonated with residents, thus the updated policy for brush pickup.”
