DETROIT — The Cleveland Guardians knew what was coming in Game 3, but it didn’t matter.
The pitching plans for the Detroit Tigers are working quite well at the moment, whether the opponent is ready or not.
Detroit left fielder Riley Greene and first baseman Spencer Torkelson each drove in a run, and six pitchers combined to lift the sixth-seeded Tigers past the second-seeded Guardians on Wednesday, 3-0, for a 2-1 lead in their best-of-five American League Division Series.
Game 4 is set for 6:08 p.m. Eastern on Thursday in Detroit, where the Tigers — the hottest team in the majors the past two months — will try to clinch their first trip to the AL Championship Series since 2013.
“We’re human,” Torkelson said. “We know how close we are.”
