Get ready to embark on a gastronomic journey like no other as you begin an exploration of the area’s international markets. It may make you feel like you’re on an excursion in a far-flung destination instead of at home here in Chattanooga.
The markets are an escape, where every aisle is a gateway to the rich tapestry of global flavors. From the aromatic spices of India to the savory delights of Europe and Asia, along with the vibrant produce of Latin America, these markets offer more than just ingredients.
“I think international markets add an immense amount of value to the grocery and restaurant scene in Chattanooga,” says Stephanie Loa, manager of Super Carniceria Loa on Broad Street. “Not only are you diversifying the market, but you are also welcoming the community into an intimate atmosphere where personal traditions are shared.”
Sushma Shanta is an instructor in Indian cooking at Cook With Sush on Facebook and says international markets such as Janta, a local mega-market with a diverse stock of Indian foods and spices, provide “a unique shopping experience” for customers.
“In fact, and while it may not have a fast-food court like some international markets in Atlanta, for several years, I used Janta as an educational destination for field trips for students at Normal Park [school],” Shanta says. “It introduced them to the various fruits, vegetables and cultural products available.”
