Three candidates have announced their intention to run for Georgia Sen. Colton Moore’s seat in District 53 after Moore, a Republican from Trenton, announced his Congressional campaign to replace U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga.
Moore is speaking to attorneys about when, and if, he would be required to resign, he said in an interview. A special election for Moore’s state Senate seat would take place within several months of his resignation, with the general election following in November 2026 for the 2027-28 term. Greene announced in November that she would resign from Congress in January.
District 53 includes Dade, Walker, Catoosa and Chattooga counties in Northwest Georgia, as well as the northern section of Floyd County.
LANNY THOMAS

Republican Lanny Thomas, the mayor of Trion for the past eight years, announced his run in a Facebook video surrounded by family on Thanksgiving Day. He has worked in various capacities to serve the Chattooga and Northwest Georgia area, Thomas said by phone, including his work as president of the District 1 Georgia Municipal Association, as a deacon at Trion First Baptist Church and as a former educator teaching a variety of subjects in grades K-12.
