From launching axes to hiring a helicopter, Chattanooga-area parents-to-be are finding unique ways to reveal the gender of their baby during celebrations with family and friends.

The trend of gender-reveal parties is believed to have taken off after a Chicago-area mommy blogger announced her baby girl in a 2008 viral post in which she cut into a cake with pink frosting. Since then, expecting moms and dads nationwide have schemed up “surprise” party ideas to unveil their pink or blue future, and Chattanoogans have followed suit.

For those whose thrill-seeking days aren’t over in parenthood, Craft Ax Throwing in East Ridge throws gender-reveal parties. A purple balloon filled with either blue or pink confetti is attached to a target, and parents take turns tossing axes at it until it pops, Olivia Schmitz, Craft Ax Throwing’s location manager, says.

There was a couple who rented the entire facility, which was decorated with banners, streamers and teaser blue and pink decor. The guests throw axes for a bit, everyone (typically, besides the person who is pregnant) drinks some beers and the party ends with a gender reveal.
