A North Georgia wedding venue plans to give LGBTQ+ couples a chance to get briskly married Saturday on a budget.
The idea of the Love is Love event, in which queer couples and well-wishers are invited to drop in during the afternoon for a wedding ceremony and a reception, is not to make a political point, said Margaret Hall, owner of The Matchbox Drive-Thru in LaFayette, Georgia.
Rather, she said, she seeks to show support for the LGBTQ+ community when many fear marriage rights could be eroded by offering a straightforward chance to get a legal marriage before the new presidential administration launches on Monday.
“It’s just a drop-in kind of thing, between the hours of 1 and 5,” Hall said by phone this week. “We hope to have a lot of people. If not, it still allows the community to know that we are an ally, and we are supportive, and if they ever have an issue with finding an officiant to make their marriage legal, they can always come to us.”
Polls show the U.S. public has grown far more accepting of same-sex marriage since it was first legalized in Massachusetts in 2004. And President-elect Donald Trump has not signaled much interest in trying to eliminate the right established in 2015 by the U.S. Supreme Court.
