Some Republican Hamilton County school board members are discussing banning students’ personal cell phones — again.

During a policy committee discussion Tuesday night, a couple of school board members said the school system’s current cell phone policy is not working.

The district’s policy allows students to store their phones in backpacks, lockers and some other locations during the school day. Principals, as well as others they designate, can give students permission to use the devices for a class assignment, and each high school can choose whether to allow students to use phones in designated areas during lunch.

“Even when students are required to put their cell phones turned off and put into their lockers, it’s still an everyday occurrence that there’ll be students that violate the policy,” school board member Larry Grohn, R-East Ridge, told the policy committee this week.
