Battle Alberson was perhaps the best-kept secret in the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga football program.
In 2024, the Mocs’ first-team defense was given fits by the accuracy of the 6-foot-2, 204-pound freshman, a preferred walk-on from Gulf Breeze, Florida, who was the scout team’s quarterback as he redshirted last season. If you were at practice, you knew of his abilities, but it was just practice, right?
There were questions as to whether that would translate to the games. His arm strength wasn’t great. But his mind, his precision, his knowledge? That was already there.
And now others have seen it as well.
Alberson — who stepped in when seventh-year senior Camden Orth was unavailable due to injury after getting hurt during last weekend’s loss to Western Carolina — set a UTC freshman record with 362 yards of total offense and four total scores, and the Mocs kept alive their (extremely) slim hopes of making the 24-team Football Championship Subdivision playoffs with a 45-28 victory over Furman on Saturday at Finley Stadium.
