PHILADELPHIA — The NFL’s 2025 season kicked off Thursday night with a wild opener between the reigning Super Bowl champions and one of their division rivals.
Some of the drama at Lincoln Financial Field even happened in the actual game.
Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts rushed for two touchdowns after the champs lost hot-tempered star defender Jalen Carter for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott seconds into the game, then withstood a rare weather delay and needed a late stop to win 24-20 early Friday as the league’s 106th year of competition got underway.
“I think our discipline wasn’t in it early in the game,” Hurts said. “Great job by our defense being able to battle and respond. Guys stepped in and filled those roles. We came into this game talking about discipline and focus, and we’ll leave it saying the same things.”
With one last chance at a comeback, Prescott threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-3 with 1:54 left to send what was left of a thinned-out home crowd into a frenzy as the Eagles started 1-0 and with an NFC East Division victory to boot. The game ended at 12:18 a.m.
