Gordon Lee and Calhoun, as expected if the GHSA postseason rankings are to be believed, earned rather easy baseball doubleheader sweeps Thursday to advance to the Class A Division I and Class AAA Elite Eight round, respectively.
The Trojans and Yellow Jackets are joined by resilient Trion, which prevailed 12-9 in game three of a wild Class A Division II series. Northwest Whitfield, in Class AAA, and Class AA’s North Murray were eliminated Thursday.
Top-seeded and defending A-DI champion Gordon Lee improved to 32-2 with a 3-1 and 11-3 sweep of Toombs County in Chickamauga. The Trojans will host Fitzgerald next Wednesday in a doubleheader start to a best-of-three series.
Gordon Lee got another strong start from senior Maddox Millard, who improved to 10-0 after pitching a complete-game, two-hitter with eight strikeouts and no earned runs. He has now gone 55 innings without allowing an earned run.
Toombs, though, got on the board first with an unearned run in the first, but Gordon Lee finally reached Toombs ace Ty Hutchinson (six innings, four hits, 12 strikeouts) with two runs in the fourth on J.R. Zeimet’s leadoff homer and, after Garrett Ross doubled to move Dustin Day to third, Day scored on a wild pitch.
