Jill Greblick, a retired social worker who moved to Chattanooga from Boston 15 months ago, was feeling lonely. It was difficult moving South, she said, where she knew no one.

So, Greblick began quietly recruiting a group of like-minded women — a huddle of strangers, really — using the centuries-old tile game mah-jongg to attract them, like a crackling campfire deep in the woods.

The common denominator among the women was a kind heart, she said.

“We all have core values that we want human beings treated well,” Greblick said in a group interview.
