I had the privilege of attending the annual Colel Chabad Gala in New York City recently. Aside from the wonderful spirit of philanthropy that filled the room, there was a profound sense of hope. Joining us was a man whose actions recently reminded the world what it means to be truly human.
While there, I had the distinct honor of meeting Ahmed al Ahmed, the man who bravely tackled a terrorist shooting into a crowd during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, on Dec. 14, 2025. [In the horrific attack, 15 people were killed by the father-and-son attackers. Al Ahmed, a Syrian Australian, disarmed the father, who then retreated before being shot dead by police. During the attack, Ahmed was shot twice.]
While speaking with Ahmed, I felt elevated from a world full of division and hate. His actions and presence were a powerful testament to the goodness that still exists.
This perspective was solidified when billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman took the stage to introduce Ahmed. He explained a fascinating distinction between two types of heroes. One level of hero is someone who puts themselves in danger to protect their own family or community. A noble act to save those you love.
There is yet a second level of hero. Someone who is not a target, who could have easily turned away or remained hidden, but chooses to step into the line of fire to save innocent lives.
