Volkswagen will recall nearly 44,000 ID.4s for the 2022 to 2025 model years because of a defect that may pose a fire risk.
The electric SUV is one of three cars the German automaker produces in Chattanooga alongside the Atlas and the Atlas Cross Sport.
In a statement, Volkswagen spokesperson Michael Lowder said affected vehicles may have defective high-voltage battery cell modules that could overheat, increasing the risk of fire. The company voluntarily notified the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the issues.

The vehicles included in this recall do not have self-discharge detection software that warns owners in advance about the health of the car’s battery, Lowder said. ID.4s equipped with this software are not part of the recall, according to federal filings. All ID.4s coming off the production line this year already have this software installed, Lowder said.
