Just weeks after Hamilton County emergency crews added whole blood products to their ambulances, crews administered the first unit of whole blood to a patient following a critical car crash earlier this month.
The early transfusion was essential for the patient, who received additional units of blood after being taken to an emergency room.
This shows how every minute matters in trauma care, and having blood available before a patient gets to a hospital can make a critical difference, according to Hamilton County EMS. It also shows the critical importance of donating blood.
“As we enter the ‘100 Deadliest Days of Summer,’ when traffic crashes and traumatic injuries traditionally increase, maintaining a strong blood supply is more important than ever,” Mike Garren of Hamilton County EMS said. “Community support through blood donation helps ensure this lifesaving resource is available when and where it is needed most.”
