The Food City grocery store at 3801 Tennessee Ave. in St. Elmo is closing permanently April 6 at 5 p.m., according to signs posted at the store.
“They don’t want to pay the lease, and since the Broad Street one is open and it’s new, they just want to keep that one open and close this one down,” Ricus Langston, the store’s front-end manager, said by phone.
Opened in 2024, Food City’s store at 1375 Broad St. was the first totally new store built by the chain within Chattanooga city limits. It is located about 2 miles from the St. Elmo store.
A Publix Super Market, which opened in 2021 at 3535 S. Broad St., is 0.1 miles from the St. Elmo Food City.
