In celebration of the first week of spring, Walker County gave away hundreds of bales of straw at the county landfill as part of Strawapalooza.
“There won’t be any musical acts performing, but there will be a lot of straw to give away,” the press release for the Tuesday event said.
Visitors were entitled to five bales of straw per day. The bales were leftover material from a slope stability project the Walker County Landfill was required to do by the state, according to Director of Solid Waste and Environmental Management Paine Gily.

The project entailed clearing rock and debris and then grading the slope of a hillside. The county used the straw to grow grass on the hillside. Straw protects freshly planted grass seed to make sure it grows evenly, according to Gily.
