If there was one question that needed to be answered for the 2026 Gordon Lee High School baseball team, it was going to be who would fill the ace role after right-hander Aiden Goodwin graduated from last season’s 39-3 state champions.

While head coach Mike Dunfee and his staff believed they knew the answer, on-field results would be the true test.

Those tests have been passed, though, by Maddox Millard. The senior right-hander for the Trojans further cemented his position atop the rotation with Thursday’s 1-0 home win over Calhoun.

Millard went the first six innings for reigning GHSA Class A Division I champion Gordon Lee (16-1) and allowed four hits with six strikeouts. The first inning would prove to be the difference against Class AAA’s Yellow Jackets (16-5) in Chickamauga as the Trojans posted their ninth shutout of the year.

“Maddox shoved again tonight,” Dunfee said. “In the first inning they had some decent swings, so I thought it was going to be a war. He dialed it in after that inning, and he just did what he’s done all year. He’s our guy right now.”
