INDIANAPOLIS — Christian Lundgaard made all the right moves Saturday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Lundgaard waited for the perfect moment to set up a daring dash to the outside with 18 laps to go, then nudged his way past David Malukas through a trio of sweeping turns on the IMS road course before speeding away from the field to win the Sonsio Grand Prix.

He’ll soon find out if the momentum gained in early May helps him in the Indianapolis 500 later this month.

The 24-year-old Danish driver snapped a 47-race winless streak, beating Malukas to the yard of bricks by 4.763 seconds for the second win of his IndyCar career and first in nearly three years. It gives the Chevrolet-powered Arrow McLaren No. 7 team a boost of confidence heading into what is annually the American open-wheel series’ biggest race of the season.

“At the end of the day, I had nothing to lose,” said Lundgaard, whose first win came on a street circuit in Toronto in July 2023. “I had so much unfinished business here. For me, it wasn’t (just) that I wanted to win. I have enough second places in the past year and a half, I wanted to win, and I was kind of willing to do whatever it took.”
