Memorial Day weekend kicks off the summer travel season as spiking fuel prices make long trips more expensive, but AAA is forecasting a record number of Tennesseans will hit the road for the holiday weekend even as the average price of a gallon of gas hits a four-year high ahead of the holiday.

“Last Memorial Day, Tennesseans paid $2.75 per gallon for gasoline,” AAA spokesperson Megan Cooper said Friday by email. “Today’s state average of $4.20 is $1.45 more expensive, which adds roughly $21 to the cost of filling a 15-gallon gas tank.”

In Chattanooga, Cooper said, drivers on Memorial Day 2025 paid $2.73 per gallon.
