The huge wintry blast that rocked Southeast Tennessee and North Georgia this morning is already creating havoc on salt supplies, city officials said this morning.
“We’re running low on salt right now and no immediate plans to get more,” said Lee Norris, deputy administrator of the city’s Public Works Department. “Everyone is in the same shape we’re in.”
He said he did not know the salt supplies at this moment, but “if we have another storm like this over the weekend, it won’t be pretty.”
He said about 35 to 40 Public Works employees are out trying to clear the streets. He said over the night was “interesting.” Salt trucks laid salt brine to prepare the roads, he said.
Then the snow plows came out after midnight when the snow started falling.
“As soon as we’d push with blades, it would fill back up,” Norris said.
He said he did not have any indication as of yet when streets would be cleared.
