Floods close roads on Christmas Day

Flooding on the W Road on Christmas Day.
Flooding on the W Road on Christmas Day. Flooding on the W Road on Christmas Day.

Red is one of those cheery Christmas colors, but on today’s National Weather Service radar, the red designation over much of the Chattanooga area is far from festive.

It stands for the flash flood warnings for Hamilton, Bradley and Polk counties in East Tennessee, as well as parts of north Georgia and Alabama. Weather advisories said 3 inches of rain had already fallen in some areas in the vicinity and 2 inches more could fall.

People in low areas prone to flash flooding should move to higher ground, and no one should drive through water standing or moving on roadways.

Most of the flash flooding warnings are set to expire by 3 this afternoon.

The National Weather Service has issued a long string of flood watches, warnings and advisories, as well as thunderstorm warnings.
