The National Weather Service reports that a cold front will bring “much colder temperatures and snow” on its way through the Chattanooga region.
Light snowfall will transition to rain during the daylight hours today as temperatures warm again.
However, snow will likely fall in the mountains due to the colder air at higher elevations. And once temperatures drop below freezing tonight, light snowfall is expected to pick up throughout the valley.
Moderate to heavy snow is expected to continue through Wednesday throughout the East Tennessee Mountains, with amounts of six to 12 inches possible along mountain peaks, the National Weather Service predicted.
Several previous forecasts for snow have yielded little accumulation in the immediate Chattanooga area, though some snow has accumulated on the mountains and in outlying areas, and cold temperatures combined with rain to create icy road conditions.
