Salvation Army providing fans, water to help Chattanooga area residents beat the heat

As temperatures rise in the Chattanooga area, The Salvation Army is working to provide Chattanooga residents relief from the heat.

Caseworkers with the organization are distributing free box fans and water to help keep low-income individuals and families cool. The Salvation Army is also extending hours at its Day Center, located at 800 McCallie Avenue, and providing a hydration station outside the facility for those who are in need of a cool drink of water, according to a news release.

Those in need of a fan can call 423-305-6200. The hydration station is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. every day that the temperature exceeds 90 degrees.

Area Commander Major Mark Smith says the most requests the organization receives during the summer are related to relief from hot temperatures.

“To meet these needs, The Salvation Army asks for new box fans, bottled water, deodorant and monetary support to provide utility assistance for low-income families,” Smith said in the release.

Monetary gifts for box fans and utility bill assistance should be marked “Beat the Heat” and mailed to 822 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37403. Donations are also accepted online at www.csarmy.org or by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY.
