Academy Sports holds opening

The first of an expected two Academy Sports + Outdoors stores in the Chattanooga area opened on Friday in Hixson.

The new retailer is in The Fountains of North Chattanooga, a development on Highway 153 that is expected to represent an investment of up to $25 million when complete.

The 66,000-square-foot store is the newest in a Texas-based chain that sells sports apparel, footwear, equipment and hunting, fishing and camping goods.

Academy is also planning a store that is expected to open this summer at The Terrace near Hamilton Place in East Brainerd. It will be at a site formerly occupied by Circuit City.
