4 qualify for special election in Rossville

ELECTIONThe Rossville special election is set for Sept. 21.

The morning after Northwest Georgia's fourth election in 90 days, four candidates in Rossville are gearing up campaigns for a new election.

The candidates qualified before Wednesday's deadline for a special election to replace former City Councilman Nathan Bain, who died July 21. The special election is scheduled for Sept. 21.

The ballot pits the late council's widow Maxine Bain against former police chief Charles "Pappy" Dunn as well as Dana Blevins and former mayoral candidate Joyce Wall.

Nathan Bain, 73, had served since on the council since 2002.

"I decided since he doesn't like to leave things unfinished I thought I would throw my hat in the ring," Maxine Bain said.

Blevins, who works as a purchasing assistant at Chattem in Chattanooga, said she is running "to make a difference."

"Honestly, I just see how Rossville has gotten a little rundown," she said. "I care about it and I care about the people here."

Attempts to reach Dunn and Wall were unsuccessful Wednesday afternoon.

Wall ran for mayor in 2007, according to Times Free Press archives. She worked for the city from 1965 to 1979, first working in the police department and later in the mayor's office.

Dunn is a former city councilman who lost his seat to Hal Gray in 2007.

Rossville Councilman Teddy Harris said he expects a low turnout and is concerned that as few as 200 voters could cast ballots.

"What worries me is that voter fatigue has already set in with all other races," Harris said.
