Traffic cameras for safety?

"Everybody" agrees we want traffic safety. All of us should abide by posted speed limits and not run red lights at intersections.

We must admit, however, that there are many motorists who do drive a little too fast sometimes, and rush through lights as they turn from yellow to red. That's bad.

But a great many drivers who do believe in effective law enforcement still don't like the idea of traffic cameras to catch violators on film.

Some people believe traffic cameras may be installed by some local governments more to collect fines than to increase safety. Many people don't like the "Big Brother is watching you" aspect of having traffic cameras. Such attitudes are reinforced when it is noted that private companies that install the cameras may do so to collect half of the fines that result, with half going to local governments.

Wouldn't it be better to post lower speed limits and have more reasonable timing for traffic signal lights - to promote real traffic safety - than to have many motorists suspect the primary purpose of traffic cameras is "fee grabbing" rather than promotion of safety?
