Chattanooga: Morning bomb threat evacuates four UTC buildings

With midterms now going on at UTC, a bomb threat was phoned into the school this morning, prompting the evacuation of four buildings.

Bomb threats seem to come in more often around exam time, said UTC spokesman Chuck Cantrell said.

Holt Hall, the University Center that houses most of the dining facilities, the Engineering, Math and Science building and Brock Hall were evacuated, he said.

At noon, the Chattanooga police bomb squad and other authorites were searching the buildings, but no bombs had been found, officials said.

"Hopefully, this is just a little bit of standing around in the cold," Mr. Cantrell said.

Chattanooga Fire Department Capt. Phil Hyman said the threat was called in about 11 a.m. today. The caller gave no reason for the threat, Capt. Hyman said, and he could not specifiy whether it was a male or female nor whether the call came from on or off campus.

Classes are continuing in other UTC buildings, Mr. Cantrell said, and if no bomb is found once the bomb squad finishes its search, classes should resume in the evacuated buildings.

Bomb threats have been called in to UTC in the past, he said, but no device has ever been found for any of them.
