Beth Alexander

Virginia "Beth" Elizabeth McKee Alexander died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010.

Born in Graysville, Tenn., in 1934, she attended Collegedale Academy from 1948-1952 and Southern Missionary College from 1951-1954. In 1954 she married James T. Alexander M.D. They were longtime residents of Ukiah, Calif., from 1962 to 2003 when they moved to Ooltewah.

She was preceded in death by her parents, O.D. McKee and Anna Ruth King McKee; and her sister, Wyn McKee Stevens.

Survivors are her husband of 55 years, James T. Alexander, M.D.; children, Kathy Alexander Beagle Janzen and husband, Terry, of Ooltewah, Donald James Alexander, Harrison; grandchildren, Anna Lee Beagle, Christopher Lee Beagle and wife, Laura all of Ooltewah, Justin Travis Alexander, Chattanooga, Liesl Michele Alexander, Phoenix, Ariz.; great-grandson, Dominic James Alexander, Phoenix; brothers, Ellsworth McKee Sr. and wife, Sharon, Jack McKee and wife, Betty, all of Ooltewah.

Graveside services will be held Sunday, at 3 p.m. in Lakewood Memory Gardens, East with Pastor Dwight Herod officiating.

Peggy Cantrell Claiborne, 74, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, in a local hospital.

Anna Hain

Anna Calabro Hain, 79, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

She was born on Aug. 11, 1930 in Reading, Pa., to the late Francesca and Guiseppe Calabro.

She worked for Boscov's Department store in Reading for 25 years before retiring in 1986.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Frank.

Survivors include her husband of 59 years, Harold "Snapper" Hain; daughter, Cindy (David) Carroll; two grandchildren, Christopher and Vincent Carroll; brother, Michael Calabro; sisters, Marsey Buono and Jennie Shalter; nephews and nieces.

A celebration of life Mass will be held at St. Jude Catholic Church, 930 Ashland Terrace on Monday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. with Father Miguel Velez officiating.

The family will meet friends in the vestibule of the church beginning at 10:30 a.m. on Monday.

A private graveside service will be held in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Rev. Albert Hamby

Rev. Albert Hamby, 87, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at his residence.

Rev. Hamby retired from Dupont after 38 years of service as a senior technical assistant. He graduated from Soddy-Daisy High School in 1941 and served our country in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific. During his many years of gospel ministry, he pastored at several churches in our area including, Hendon Baptist Church, Lake Drive Baptist Church and Grace Baptist Church located in Chattanooga. He served as Interim Pastor at New Salem Baptist Church where he was currently a member. Rev. Hamby was active in Daisy Masonic Lodge #706 F&AM for many years, including serving as Chaplain.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Larkin and Omey Hamby; daughter, Shirley Williams and several brothers and sisters.

Rev. Hamby is survived by his wife of more than 681/2 years, Mildred Smith Hamby, of Soddy-Daisy; daughter, Pat (Spencer) Jewell, of Soddy-Daisy; sons, Robert (Betty) Hamby, of Palm Coast, Fla., Bill Hamby and Steve Hamby, both of Soddy-Daisy; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010 in the Legacy Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Alan Rogers and the Rev. and Hon. Clarence Shattuck officiating.

Interment will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with military honors.

Herman "Pete" Hawkins, 75, of Signal Mountain, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, in a local health care facility.

Margaret Hicks-Kelley

Margaret Novella Hicks-Kelley, 71, of Ardmore, Ala., formerly of Chattanooga departed this life Friday, Jan. 22, 2010.

She was born in Chattanooga to the late Marvin and Ethel Voiles Ingle, and was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Kelley.

Survivors include her son, Ricky Hicks, of Ardmore, Ala.; brother, Billy Ingle, of Chickamauga; grandchildren, Samantha Hicks, Stephanie Harrison, both of Ardmore, Ala., Ricky (Christina) Hicks, of Panama City, Fla.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, in the chapel with Pastor Waylon Ingle officiating.

Interment will follow in Coulter Cemetery.

Gladys Jackson

Gladys Roberta Williams Jackson, 97, of Chattanooga, transitioned from earth to heaven on Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010.

She was a faithful member of new Monumental Baptist Church. She retired from The 3M Co. after 33 years of service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel G. Jackson; sister, Mary Etta Dorsey; brother, Louis Williams; and great-grandson, Wendell "LJ" Gilliam Jr.

Survivors include: a loving son and caretaker, Louis B. (Mary) Gilliam; grandsons, Michael Gilliam, Terry (Sherby) Gilliam, Pageland S.C., Angelo Gilliam, Charlotte, N.C., and Wendell (Athina) Gilliam, Atlanta; granddaughters, Andee Beavers, Charlotte, N.C., and Jackie Dunson, Las Vegas, Nev.; devoted nieces Ruth Ranklin, Mamie Burton and Bernice Ealey; nephews, Andrew Jackson, Richard, Frank and Eddie Dorsey; and 64 great and great-great-grandchildren, extended family and devoted friends.

Jim Justice II

James "Jim" Clyde Justice II, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away peacefully in his home after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease on Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2010.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. today at the North Chapel.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:30 a.m. today at the North Chapel.

Bobby Lewis

Bobby Lee Lewis, 79, of East Ridge, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010.

Mr. Lewis was born in Chattanooga to the late Floyd and Leloa Lewis. He was retired from Lawson Electric with over 35 years of service where he belonged to the IBEW 755. He was also a member of East Ridge Lodge 755 F&AM, the Faternal Order of Eagles 945, and the American Legion Post 95. He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran serving during the Korean War and a graduate of Central High School.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Velma "Val" Lewis; brother, Clyde Lewis; brother-in-law, Hoyt Headrick; and sister-in-law, Billie Skyles.

Survivors include his daughter, Sherry (Kenny) Kennedy; grandchildren, Kimie and Jeffrey; sister, Betty Headrick; sister-in-law, Pat Lewis; nieces, Lani Skyles and Leslie (Scott) Shepherd; nephews, Randy, Steve and Quinton (Tara) Skyles, Danny Roark, and Sam Lewis; and brother-in-law, Mickey (Joyce) Penland.

Nancy Cleo Matthews, 91, of Hixson, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at a local hospital.

She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. She was retired from Dixie Yarns after 50 years of service. She was a member of the Ladies Bethany Class for many years, also a member of Monday School-Church services at the Hamilton County Nursing Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marion E. and Mary Ann Layne; brothers, Ray Layne, John Layne, Calvin Layne; sisters, Violet London, Beatrice Poe, Mary Worley, Elizabeth Raines, Ruby Clayton, Mabel Clayton.

She is survived by her son, Larry (Teresa) Matthews; brother, David Marshall (Elsie) Layne; sister, Mildred Lenora Roberson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Darryl Duggar officiating.

Interment will follow the service at Friendship Cemetery in Hixson.

Tommy Miller, 58, of Hixson, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at his home.

He was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the North Georgia Street Rods and the National Hot Rods Association.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert J. Miller; brothers, Teddy Miller, Dewey Miller.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Phyllis Miller; sons, Robby (Tiffany) Miller, Derek (Lindsey) Miller; grandson, Asa Miller; mother, Betty Miller; brother, Jacky Miller; sisters, Deloris Aslinger, Diane Roberts.

Donald Mroz

Donald Mroz, 63, of Harrison, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton, Ga.

He was born Dec. 16, 1946 in Johnson City, N.Y. to the late Henry and Anna Mroz.

Mr. Mroz was an Electrical Engineer and was currently serving as an Assistant Professor at Dalton State College. He was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Reva Mroz; three sons, David A. Mroz and his wife, Michele, of Harrison, Mike P. Mroz and his wife, Mandy, of Hixson, Paul T. Mroz and his wife, Charity, of Harrison; eight grandchildren, Kayla, Daniel, Kendall, Riley, Jacob, Tristan, Nathan and Olivia; one niece, Jenny; two sisters, Laureen Meier, of Florida; Janice Hennessey, of Georgia.

A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church with Father Jim Vick officiating. The family will receive friends from today 10 a.m.-11 a.m. at the church prior to the service.

Joan Murray

Joan Reagin McNeill Murray, 73, passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 18, 2010.

Joan was an ardent arts advocate, fundraiser, community activist and loyal supporter of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a loving friend.

Joni was born in Atlanta, and moved to Louisville, Ky., where she attended the University of Louisville and was a member of the Alpha Theta chapter of Sigma Kappa sorority. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she established a chapter of Sigma Kappa. She was national president of the Sigma Kappa Foundation during which time she established a scholarship fund for young collegiate women. The Louisville chapter of Sigma Kappa' dedicated a room in her honor.

Her affiliations at UTC included membership on the UTC Foundation and the Chancellors Roundtable. She received the UTC Alumni Affairs Outstanding Service Award, was on the Board of Governors of the UTC Alumni Association, president of the Alumni Council and won an Honorary Alumni Award. She established an endowed scholarship for deserving students and an endowed lecture series to educate young people about domestic violence. The beautiful campus carillons were donated in her honor because of her love for the UTC campus and music.

The arts community in Chattanooga is indebted for her tireless efforts on their behalf. Joni served as president of the Chattanooga Symphony Guild, the Chattanooga Symphony Board and was instrumental in establishing the merger of the Chattanooga Symphony and the Chattanooga Opera into the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Association. She was the first president of the new board. Joni was president and was currently on the board of the Chattanooga Ballet and a past member of the Chattanooga Theatre Centre Board. She also served as president of the Volunteer Council for the League of American Orchestras (formerly ASOL).

Another passion of Joni Murray's was her work for abused women and children. She wrote pamphlets, training material and gave seminars in the community to educate people about this abuse and recently endowed a seminar program at UTC.

Joni served the Partnership for Families, Children and Adults in numerous ways, both as a board member, the founder and first president of the Associates Group and one of the creators of the Holiday Cheer Program. She gave many speeches in the community about the issues of domestic violence and was a staunch advocate for victim's rights.

Other community organizations for which Joni worked were the Hamilton County Medical Auxiliary (past president), advisory board of Kids on the Block, the Willliam L. Montague Performing Arts Fund, the EOS Orchestra Board and the AIM Center Board.

On an international level, Joni was executive director of the Vakhtang Jordania International Conducting Competition for five years in the Ukraine and one year in Chattanooga.

Other community awards she received was being named Chattanooga Woman of Distinction by the American Lung Association of Tennessee.

She was an avid gardener and creative cook who loved to entertain in her lovely home. Joni was known as "Clown Joni" as she had an extensive clown collection which was featured on HGTV. She enjoyed traveling and had travelled to all seven continents. Her favorite two places she visited were the Panama Canal and the Great Wall of China. An accomplished violinist, Joni won a violin competition and was soloist with the Louisville Symphony Orchestra. Her favorite piece of music was "Pictures at an Exhibition."

Joni is survived by her husband of seven years, Leonard Bancroft Murray; son, Thomas (Michelle) McNeill, of Chattanooga; son, Ray McNeill of Vermont; granddaughters, Eve and Reagin McNeill, of New Hampshire and Texas; grandsons, Cody and Trey McNeill, of Chattanooga, daughter, Melissa Murray McKown and granddaughter, Erin McKown, of Chattanooga, sister Joyce (Kenneth) Koehler of Louisville; sister-in-law, Marilyn Day and brother-in-law, Jim Moyer , both of Clarksville, Tenn., and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by a host of loving friends.

A celebration of Joni's life will take place today, Jan. 23, 2010, at noon at St. Martin's Episcopal Church at 7547 East Brainerd Road. Following the service a light buffet lunch will served in the Parish Hall.

Caroline M. O'Brien, 65, of Chattanooga, passed away Friday, Jan. 22, 2010, at a local health care facility.

Lesa Pendergrass

Lesa Sutton Pendergrass, 50, of Georgetown, Tenn., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, from her earthly home.

She was a lifelong member of New Shepherd Hill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Louise Sutton.

She is survived by one daughter, Brooke Robison; one sister, Sherri (Joe) Kelly; niece, Brandi (Ben) Earman; nephew, Kevin (Nancy) Rapier; goddaughters, Leslie and Kalleigh Eldridge.

Funeral service will be held at graveside today in Old McDonald Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Browning, the Rev. Ernest Sutton and the Rev. Joe Kelly officiating.

Rita Diane Rose, 72, of Chattanooga, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at her home.

Rita was retired from Olan Mills and worked part time at Russell Stover. She was an avid Indy and Nascar fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Pearl Sibert.

She is survived by her children, Mark Rose, Chattanooga; Gary Rose and wife, Denise, Chattanooga, Cindy Sandlin, Ringgold, Kent Rose, Chattanooga; sister, Dolores Gibbens, Cincinnati, Ohio; brothers, Robert Sibert, Pendleton, Ind.; and Dave Sibert, Terre Haute, Ind.; and 10 grandchildren.

June Stevens

June Stevens passed away on Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at St. Barnabas Nursing Home. She was 98.

During her rich lifetime June moved to Oklahoma where she did electrical wiring on Lockheed's B24 and B25 Bombers, on behalf of the war effort. From there she became a civilian worker on Oak Ridge's Manhattan Project. She had been an active member of Daisy United Methodist Church for many, many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Will and Louhannah Stergil; and a husband, Joe; sister, Ruby; daughter, Evangeline; grandson Spooky; and great-grandson Jonathan.

She is survived by her son, Bill his wife, Jane; grandchildren, Tommy, Gwen, Kim, Tony, Phyllis, and Alan; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, in the J. Avery Bryan Chapel.

Burial will follow in Plowman Cemetery in Apison.

DAYTON -- Joe Steve Atkins passed away Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at a local hospital.

Mr. Atkins was born in Chattanooga and retired from the U.S. Army after 30 years of service, and served in Desert Storm.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey S. Atkins; son, Steven Dewayne Atkins; and parents, J.C. and Mary Rhoda Atkins.

KNOXVILLE -- Deanna Smith Burrell, 67, formerly of Dunlap, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010.

DeAnna was a graduate of Sequatchie County High School and University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She was head majorette at U.T. and a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She worked in New York and Arizona in television and modeling talent management.

She was preceded in death by parents, Briggs Hixson and Bobbie Anderson Smith; and nephew, Michael Briggs Kirkland.

Wilford Short

PORTLAND -- Wilford C. Short, 81, died peacefully in his sleep Monday, Dec. 14, 2009.

He served many years as Camp Director of Boy Scout Camp, Camp Cherokee on Ocoee Lake. He retired after 20 plus years with the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout Executive.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean; two sons, Monty and Tony; daughter, Lee Anne.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Dec. 16, 2009.

DUNLAP -- Kelly Lee Sims, 77, died early Friday morning Jan. 22, 2010, at his home.

He was of the Church of God faith and was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Annie Sims; sister, Dorothy Hinshaw; brother, Norman Sims.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Sims; daughter, Linda (Billy) Gaston; three sons, Donald (Tracy), Ricky (Margie) Sims and Larry Johnson, all of Dunlap; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Bobby Farley; three brothers, Donnie (Connie), Denver (Joyce) and Edmond (Shirley) Sims, all of Dunlap; sister-in-law, Betty Sims, Smithville; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. CST in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Lanny Tate and the Rev. Dan Rains officiating.

Burial will be in Sequatchie County Memorial Gardens.

FORT OGLETHORPE -- Brenda Lee Hope, 60, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, at her residence.

The daughter of the late Mickey and Dora Mullens Hope, she was a member of Parkway Baptist Temple. Mrs. Hope was preceded in death by her brother, Greg Hope.

Survivors include her daughter, Jeannie McGill; and grandson, Alex, both of Fort Oglethorpe.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the chapel with Dr. David Sampson and the Rev. Tony Wilson officiating.

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Viola Ione Miller, 86, passed away Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010.

She was a lifelong resident of Lookout Mountain. She was an active member of Lookout Mountain Lions Club; she enjoyed quilting and was a faithful member of Lookout Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Morris W. Miller; parents, John and Virginia Mathews; three brothers, Felix Mathews, Phillip Mathews, Troy Mathews; and her sister, Clarice Hawkins.

Survivors include three sons and wives, Roger (Kay) Miller, Birmingham, Ala., Larry (Helen) Miller, Lookout Mountain, Steve (Judy) Miller, Lookout Mountain; sister, Joyce Smith, Lookout Mountain; brothers, George Mathews, Herbert Mathews and Ralph Mathews, all of Lookout Mountain; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the Trenton chapel.

Burial will follow in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Don Powers

THOMASVILLE -- Don T. Powers, 59, passed away suddenly at Archbold Memorial Hospital early Saturday morning, Jan. 9, 2010.

Don was educated at Tennessee Tech and David Lipscomb University. Don began drawing as a child and found a bond with art that defined his soul. He was a devoted father, loyal husband, and passionate about the smallest joys in life. Don sought to bring a sense of existential appreciation to everyone he knew and loved. A self-taught artist, Don became Art Director at the Tennessee State Museum where he met Jeanne, also an artist. Don was friends with the eminent Dalai Lama and President Jimmy Carter, authors Peter Matthiessen and Stephen Mitchell, and the late artist Neil Welliver. He was adopted into the Shawnee Nation in 1975 for his Native American-themed work. In 1984 He was awarded the Lyndhurst Prize for art. In 2006 he illustrated "The Silver Donkey," by Sonya Hartnett. He was a mentor to all who knew and loved him, a guiding light of imagination, and is an eternal inspiration.

Don is survived by Jeanne Donaldson Powers, his wife of 33 years; his sons, Nathaniel Walden Powers and Daniel Everett Powers; his mother, Ruby Powers, of Madison, Tenn.; his brother, Dan Powers of Buffalo Valley, Tenn.; nephew, Cody Powers and his son, Bryce, of Gallatin, Tenn.; niece, Dana Davis and her children, Silas, Aidan and Savannah, of Whitehouse, Tenn.; and Rachel Lassiter and her sons, Leyton and Liam.

A memorial service is to be held at Four Mile Village, Fla., at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Androcles Society.

Cora Stubblefield

ROSSVILLE -- Cora T. Stubblefield, 75, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010, at her residence.

She was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga and North Georgia areas. Mrs. Stubblefield was a member of Silverdale Baptist Church where she was a member of the Primetimers. She was past Director of the Alzheimer's Day Care at Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Stubblefield had lived in Port Orange, Fla., for eight years and was a member of Daytona Beach Baptist Church where she was the Director of Grief Share for six years.

Survivors are her loving husband of 14 years, Samuel C. Stubblefield; daughters, Debbie (Mike) Macera, Ooltewah, Donna (Rick) Brady, Rossville, Sherry (Mike) Ford, East Brainerd; stepdaughter, Diana Sikes, Rossville; stepson, Brian Stubblefield, Chattanooga; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Eric Stitts officiating.

Interment in Tennessee-Georgia Memorial Park.
