Candidates criticize challenge to Arizona immigration law

NASHVILLE - They don't see eye to eye on many issues, but Republican gubernatorial candidate Ron Ramsey and Democratic rival Mike McWherter agree on one thing.

They don't like the U.S. Justice Department's lawsuit against Arizona over the state's controversial immigration law, which requires police to check the immigration status of people they stop whom they believe are in the U.S. illegally.

"Just when you think it unfathomable that Washington can get any crazier, they announce news highlighting just how out of touch they are with mainstream Americans," said Lt. Gov. Ramsey in a news release. He pledged to enact a similar immigration measure if elected.

Mr. McWherter, a Jackson, Tenn., businessman, said "the administration is wrong on this one."

In Tennessee's 3rd Congressional District contest, Republicans Robin Smith and Chuck Fleischmann have criticized the Obama administration's lawsuit.
