UGA oil spill documentary to air this week

ATHENS, Ga. - A new documentary by a University of Georgia researcher who traveled into the Gulf of Mexico to gauge the impact of the worst offshore oil spill in the nation's history will air this week.

Georgia Public Broadcasting will show "Black and Blue: Beneath the Gulf Oil Disaster" at 7 p.m. Wednesday. The documentary follows UGA marine sciences professor Samantha Joye on her trip into the Gulf within a mile of where the Deep Water Horizon rig sank and began spouting oil into the ocean last month.

Her crew discovered a second plume of oil 3,000 feet below the water's surface that was miles long and wide. They worked to gather water samples from 5,000 feet below the surface and analyze them.
