Olin Brotherton III

Olin Lamar Brotherton III, a former resident of Chattanooga, passed away Saturday, March 13, 2010, in St. Joseph's Hospital after a long illness.

He was born on Dec. 15, 1959. He attended McCallie School and the University of Tennessee. He was a great sports enthusiast and a true Big Orange fan. Prior to his illness he was in the carpet business in Tampa.

He is survived by his beloved wife and best friend, Linda Brotherton; his mother, Phyllis (Jerry) Lingerfelt; a sister, Betsy (Hugh) Smalley; and a stepbrother, Matthew Brotherton. He has two nieces, Katie and Mary Claire Smalley, of Nashville; aunts, Nancy (Ed) Hunt, Karen (Dan) Saieed, Joy Mullins; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, O.L. Brotherton Jr.; his grandparents, Gladys and Estil Mullins; and paternal grandparents, Mildred and O. L. Brotherton.

Blount and Curry Funeral Homes, Carrollwood Chapel, Tampa, Fla., handled all the arrangements.

A private family memorial will be held at a later time.

The family has requested no flowers.

Donations in his memory may be made to Metropolitan Ministries of Tampa.

William Bryan

William Thomas "Tom" Bryan, 60, of North Chattanooga, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2010.

He was a veteran of the Marine Corps. He was the owner of Apis Repair. He loved his dogs, his family and friends. He loved talking about the old times and drinking beer. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Gwen "Honey" Bryan; and two brothers, Doyle Dickson and Melvin Dickson.

The Rev. Ronald Namanny will conduct a memorial service at 2 p.m. Monday, March 22, in Grace Baptist Church.

Delores Bryson

Delores Lane "Honeybunch" Bryson, formerly of Atlanta and Chattanooga, passed away on Friday, Jan. 15, 2010, in Los Angeles.

She is survived by her son, Louis "Chico" Bryson Jr.; and daughter, Lynn Bryson Charles; son-in-law, Patrick Charles; and granddaughter, Grace Sophia Charles, Los Angeles; her sister, Sherri (Perry) Herman, Chattanooga; and niece, Maria Dill; her dearest friend, Dr. Virginia Harris Johnson; and countless other friends and relatives.

Memorial services for our beloved mother, friend and retired teacher, Delores "Honeybunch" Lane Bryson, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010, at the Church of Incarnation, 2407 Cascade Road, SW, Atlanta, with the Rev. Canon Dr. A. Gordon Okunsanya presiding. Repast will follow the service.

James Cox

James R. "Jim" Cox died Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, in Naples, Fla.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

The service will be officiated by Father Don Fishburne and Father Jim Marquis.

Visitation at the church will be one hour before the service.

A reception will follow the service at the church in the Key Andrews Hall.

Evelyn Davis

Evelyn Perocchi Davis, 88, died Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at NHC Chattanooga, where she had resided since 2001.

Born in Plant City, Fla., her family owned and managed orange groves and farmland in Central Florida. She was educated in local schools and received nursing training in Jacksonville, Fla. She met and married Wheatley Davis Sr. during WWII while he was stationed with USAF at McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Fla. They also lived in Mobile, Ala., where Mr. Davis served before departing for the China-Burma Theater. Upon returning to the United States, they lived in Memphis, Mr. Davis' home. Upon retirement in 1973, they moved to Florida and enjoyed family, boating and fishing. Mrs. Davis was an accomplished cook, seamstress and collector. Ill health brought them to Chattanooga in 2001 to be near family.

Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband in 2003 and by her parents, Clara and Tony Perocchi; brothers, Danny, Julius, George, Joe and sister, Celia Miley, all of Plant City, Fla.

Survivors include Fran (Andy) Rittenberry, Lookout Mountain, Tenn., Wheatley (Robin) Davis Jr. and Jonathon (Melissa) Davis, both of Atlanta; four grandsons, Andrew Rittenberry, New Canaan, Conn., Davis Rittenberry, Chattanooga; Wheatley Robert Davis and Jonathon Davis Jr., Atlanta; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Susanna Rittenberry, of New Canaan, Conn.

Private burial will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd, Lookout Mountain.

Mildred Dorsey

Mildred Long Dorsey, 92, passed from this life on Friday, March 19, 2010, in a local medical facility.

A native of Chattanooga, she was the only child of Ben and Mabel Long, who lived in North Chattanooga throughout their married life. Mildred graduated from City High School and attended Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Since her mother was employed by Southern Bell Telephone Co., Mildred spent each summer and many weekends with her grandparents in Whiteside, Tenn. She joined the Whiteside Methodist Church when she was 12 and remained an active Methodist throughout her lifetime. During her membership with Forest Avenue United Methodist Church, she was a member of United Methodist Women and the Finance Committee. At the time of her death, she was a member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church.

Mildred was employed in the office of the Home Stores and the Chattanooga Free Press before joining Southern Bell Telephone Co. in Chattanooga. In 1940, she transferred to AT&T in Atlanta. Later, she moved to the New York office of AT&T as a trainer. Upon retirement, Mildred returned to Chattanooga.

In 1983, she was married to Thad Dorsey and they had the privilege of traveling to many countries before his death in 1991. In 1995 she, along with many other members of her church, moved into the newly opened apartments at Asbury Center and remained there as it became Alexian Grove.

Mildred was predeceased by her husband and her parents.

She is survived by several cousins and by her beloved care giver, Judy Jones.

A funeral service will be held in the Kate Lyle West Chapel of First-Centenary United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, with the Rev. David Harr officiating.

Visitation will be one hour before the service in the narthex of the Church.

Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Ray Eastes Jr.

Chester Raymond "Ray" Eastes Jr., 82, of Chattanooga, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2010.

Ray served our country in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving as an honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church and served in the home ministry.

Ray is survived by his loving wife, Mary Tatum Eastes; children, Diane (Jon) Havert, Fort Wayne, Ind., Abby Walls, Ocoee, Fla., and April (Dee) Skinner, Fort Wayne, Ind.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild; brother, David (Sharon) Eastes, Leo, Ind.; several nieces and nephews.

Services for Ray will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at the North Chapel with Rev. Bert Jones officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. today and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday at the North Chapel.

Margaret Gann

Margaret "Tootsie" Gann, 94, of Hixson, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, March 20, 2010.

Tootsie was born in Hixson, on Dec. 8, 1915 to the late Walter and Maude Bailey. She attended Hixson High School and graduated from McKenzie College, where she taught for several years. Tootsie was the office manager for Kingsboro Mills and J.W. Bray.

She loved her home and her family.

Tootsie was preceded in death by her husband, Blayne Gann; a brother, Joe Bailey; and a sister, Edna Marsh.

She is survived by her daughter, Deanna (Neil) Shelton; three grandchildren, Karen (Mike) Delashmitt, Kim Fulmer and Mike (Theresa) Fulmer; five great grandchildren, Derrick and Jeremy Delashmitt, Ericka, Tabitha and Kayla Fulmer; brother, Murl "Buddy" Bailey; several nieces and nephews.

Services for Margaret will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the North Chapel with the Rev. Robert Randolph and the Rev. Bruce Wilson officiating.

Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens with Bob Youngblood, Mart Eustice, Ryan Keylon, Tony Warren, Derrick and Jeremy Delashmitt serving as pallbearers.

Lois Hogan

Lois Wright Hogan, 66, of Sale Creek, passed away Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010 at her home.

She was born on Feb. 27, 1944, in West Virginia and raised in Oneida, Tenn., where she was laid to rest on Wednesday, March 3, 2010.

Lois was a member of Sequoyah Baptist Tabernacle.

She was preceded in death her parents, Hobart and Rosa Wright; first husband, Franklin Lebron Hogan; two brothers, Casto and Kenneth Wright; four sisters, Flonnie Blevins, Wanda Compton, Aree Blevins, Linda Wright.

Larry Ketcham Jr.

Howard Lawrence Ketcham Jr., 83, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday morning, March 18, 2010.

He was born in Richmond, Va., the son of the late Howard L. Ketcham Sr. and Sara Irwin Ketcham. He was preceded in death by a son, Steven Lawrence Ketcham; brother, William Irwin Ketcham.

He received his B.S. degree in chemical engineering from Virginia Tech. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in the Philippines. He was a former member of Central Baptist Church in Woodmore, where for 25 years he headed up the Junior High School R.A. Program. Currently, he was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He received six plaques from the American Oil Chemical Society for having produced the perfect cellulose product. He began his career in chemical engineering at the Southern Chemical Cotton which became Hercules and later opened up as Southern Cellulose where he retired as technical director after 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara B. Ketcham, of Chattanooga; son, Gary Howard Ketcham, of Chattanooga; and daughter, Carol Lynn Ketcham, of Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Bill Owens officiating.

Interment will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Rader F. Kirkley, 86, of Chattanooga, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, in a local health care facility.

He was born in Douglasville, Ga., and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was of the Methodist faith.

Mr. Kirkley was retired from SunTrust Bank as a security guard.

Rev. James Martin

The Rev. James Howard Martin, 80, of Chattanooga, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 19, 2010.

He retired from the hospitality industry as a maintenance engineer and served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean War. He was a member of Mount Cumberland Church in Athens, Tenn.

He is preceded in death by his wives, Charlotte Clariese Martin and Evelyn Queen Martin; and grandson Joshua D. Pallas.

He is survived by his children Roy E. (Pam) Edmonds, Kenneth D. Pallas, James A. Martin (Tracy Brown) and Jamie D. Eula Gray "Granny" McDaniel, 100, who was born Jan. 1, 1910, in New Tazewell, Tenn., passed away March 19, 2010, in Baton Rouge, La.

Eula Gray retired from the Krystal Co. after 30 years where she was the secretary for the city manager. She was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. She was a 50-plus year member of Sunnyside Chapter 359 Order of the Eastern Star, a past matron and a grand representative to North Carolina. She loved to travel the world to visit her children and grandchildren, wherever they may be stationed. She always had a smile on her face and never met a stranger.

Eula Gray was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin McDaniel; daughter, Della Mae Clark; parents, Louis K. Harmon Sr. and May Elizabeth (Mollie) Harmon; brothers, Dana and Louis K. Harmon Jr.; sisters, Lizzie Harmon, Agnes Harmon and Mae Coffey; grandson, James Lewis; and great-grandson Scott Johnson.

She is survived by her son, Lawrence McDaniel; sisters, Vannah Tune, Ruby Corbett, Madge Estes and Billie Jean Minton; son-in-law, Haskell M. Alex Moody, 22, of Ooltewah, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2010.

Alex was born and raised in Chattanooga and was a graduate of Ooltewah High School, where he was a member of the marching band. He was a member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his mother and stepfather, Linda and Donald Faul; father and stepmother, Barry and Sherry Moody; fiancée, Emily Bridges; stepbrother, Travis Faul; stepsister, Monica (Micah) Carroll; grandparents, Edward and Nancy Kemper; grandmother, Opal Moody; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John W. Moody.

Marlietha Naylor, 55, passed away Friday, March 12, 2010, in Chattanooga.

Edna Pearson

Edna Hooper Pearson, 95, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2010, at NHC Healthcare Center.

Formerly of Chattanooga, she had resided in Johnson City, Tenn., for the past 18 years. She was the daughter of the late Reece E. and Hattie McAmis Hooper, of Cleveland, Tenn.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Elbert L. Pearson in 1997.

She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Johnson City and a former member of Brainerd Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga.

She is survived by her daughter, Pam Pearson Sams, of Johnson City; grandson, Jordan Sams and his wife, Khia, of Johnson City; and grandson Ian Sams, of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Several cousins also survive.

The family would like to thank the staffs of NHC Healthcare, Wellington Place of Johnson City and Caris Hospice for all the loving care that they have provided over the past 10 years.

The funeral service for Edna Hooper Pearson will be conducted at 3 p.m. today, March 21, 2010, in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, 404 S. Moore Road.

The graveside committal service will follow in Fort Hill Cemetery, Cleveland, Tenn.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. today at the funeral home prior to the service.

Ruby Lucile Potter, 85, of Harrison, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 18, 2010, from her earthly home.

She was a member of Oak Grove Church of God.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, William and Sarah Barbee; first husband, James W. Sims; several brothers and sisters.

She is survived husband, James I. Potter; two sons, James Raymond Sims and Charles Eugene Sims, all of Birchwood; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah (Ernest) Spangler, of Harrison; one sister, Louvinnie Ellison, of Birchwood; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today, March 21, 2010, in the Highway 58 Chapel of Turner Funeral Home with the Rev. James Dotson officiating.

Interment will follow in Williamson Cemetery.

Dr. Geraldine Price

Dr. Geraldine "Gerry" Silcox Gill Price, M.D., died on Saturday, March 6, 2010, in Portland, Ore., after a long illness.

Dr. Gill was born in New York City, N.Y., on July 29, 1923. Her family moved to Sarasota, Fla., in 1926 and later returned to New York and then moved to Ridgefield, Conn. In 1938 her family moved to Chattanooga, where her father, Col. Harrison Gill, opened an architectural office.

Dr. Gill graduated from Chattanooga High School in June 1939 at the age of 16. She then entered the University of Chattanooga and graduated with a degree in chemistry. During World War II, she served in the Canadian WACS and later returned to Chattanooga. The Chattanooga Southern Ferro Alloy Co. employed her as a chemist.

In 1945 she enrolled in the University of Tennessee Medical School where she met her future husband, Dr. Allyn Price. Upon graduation she and her husband served their residency in eastern Kentucky, the Appalachian area. They later moved to Estacada, Ore., where they began their medical practice.

Dr. Price is survived by her son, Allyn Price Jr.; and her daughter, Ms Peggy Hindahl; sisters, Barbara (Porter) Hutchinson, St. Petersburg, Fla., Elinor Vandergriff, Medina, Texas; and her brother, Harrison W. Gill Jr., Chattanooga.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Malcolm Roland Gill; and her sister, Marion Fairchild Gill.

She was the oldest granddaughter of Dr. Everett and Mrs. Emma Gill who served as missionaries for the Southern Baptist Church in Europe for 30 years.

Dr. Price returned to Medical School where she earned a residency in psychiatry and practiced psychiatry for 25 years before she retired.

Cleveland Robinson, 98, passed away on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at a local health care facility.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Moore Robinson; and parents, Kary and Janie Robinson.

Survivors include his sons, Charlie (Sara) Moore, Harold Moore and Coy L. (Carleen) Moore, all of Huntsville, Ala., Paul (Arlene) Moore and Dayrel (Juliet) Moore; daughters, Annie Moore and Frances Davis; brothers, Hudson and Jimmy D. Milton L. Shepherd, 86, of Chattanooga, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2010, in a local hospital.

He was a member of Prospect Baptist Church, where he served on the Deacon Board.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Shepherd; parents, Samuel Lewis and Williana Shepherd; and nephew, Frank Ware Jr.

William Vandergriff

William Lewis Vandergriff, 88, of Falling Water, passed away Friday, March 19, 2010, at his home.

He was born Feb. 25, 1922, in Lone Oak, Tenn., to the late William F. and Ellen Lewis Vandergriff.

Mr. Vandergriff was retired from Hormel Foods after 40 years of service.

He was a member of Falling Water Baptist Church and was a United States Navy veteran, serving during World War II.

His son, William W. Vandergriff; brother, John Vandergriff; sisters, Elsie Hartman, Mary Hartman, and Allie Mayberry preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Mary Lucile Vandergriff; son, Kenneth W. (Elaine) Vandergriff; daughter-in-law, Patricia S. Vandergriff, all of Falling Water; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one half brother, Sam Vandergriff; and one half sister, Rose Ethel Vandergriff.

David D. Wilson Jr., 87, of East Ridge, passed away on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at a local hospital.

Mr. Wilson was born in Chattanooga to David and Ellen Wilson. He retired as a baker from Wonder Bread. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII and a member of VFW Post 1289, American Legion Post 95 and First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his son, David A. Wilson, of North Hollywood, Calif.; stepdaughter, Charlotte Scroggs; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepchildren, James T. Williams and Patricia Howard; brothers, Frank, Taylor and Orlando Wilson; and sisters, Esther Lee Bonner, Marie Burnett, Faye Reece and Alice Gardenhire.

Wilma Gonia

CLEVELAND -- Wilma Christina Gonia, 88, went home to be with the Lord on Friday afternoon, March 19, 2010.

She was the daughter of the late, Columbus Blaine Keeney and Nora Jones Keeney. She was also preceded in death by her sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Elmo Harmon, Reba and Erwin Dorn, I.B. Gonia; nephews David Harmon, Clayton Harmon.

She, along with her husband, Bishop Winston Gonia, served their Lord through their work with the Church of God of Prophecy for many years. She was very involved in baking goods to be sold by the church to raise money for church activities. At the time of her death she was a member of Hickory Valley Church of God of Prophecy in Chattanooga.

KNOXVILLE -- Marlene Doss Heard, 78, formerly of Chattanooga, passed away peacefully at her home in Knoxville on Thursday, March 18, 2010.

She was a member of Stuart Heights Baptist Church, Chattanooga, and attended Southside Baptist in Knoxville. Mrs. Heard enjoyed quilting with the South Knoxville Senior Center Quilting Club. Her greatest joy came from her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Preceded in death by husband, Ed Burnette, who passed away in 1988; and husband, Thurman Heard, who passed away in 2007.

Survived by son, Ronnie Kelly; daughter, Mary Ann Rice; grandchildren, Michael, Steven and Angela Kelley, Mary Kate Conley and Bill Rice; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Noah and Katelyn Kelley; sisters, Betty McEntire, Martha Jump, Linda Green and Ethel Doss; brothers, Henry and Josh Doss.

John Moloney

SPRING CITY -- John Joseph Moloney III, 81, died Friday, March 19, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Chattanooga.

Born in Elmhurst, Ill., he was the son of the late John Joseph and Florence Mae Herne Moloney II. John was a retired sales representative. He and his wife, Althea, moved to Spring City four years ago from Venice, Fla. John was the happiest spending time with his family and friends, tending his garden, working outdoors and playing bridge. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy, and a member of the Spring City United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Jane Nichols.

PIKEVILLE -- Clifford Leon Robinson, 45, of Dayton, Ohio, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

Cliff was born Aug. 12, 1964, in Pikeville, Tenn. He was the fourth-born child of Ray and Wilma Robinson. He spent most of his life in Dayton, Ohio. He lived and worked in Dayton, Tenn., for a short period of time at La-Z-Boy. Upon his return to Ohio he was employed by Applebees Inc., where he received numerous awards including Employee of the Year three times.

Cliff goes home to join his father, Ray M. Robinson; daughter, Christeen Duran-Robinson; sister, Karan A. Robinson; brother, Victor E. "Geno" Robinson; special cousins, Warren C. Robinson and Alan D. Robinson; and special uncle, Charles Robinson.

Bill Adams Jr.

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- George W. Adams Jr., 74, Lookout Mountain, Ga., went to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at his residence.

He was a member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church and he was also an ordained deacon in the PCA. George was a substitute teacher at Chattanooga Christian School and Chattanooga Valley High School for many years. He was active in the GOP, where he held many offices throughout the years. He served as a medic in the United States Air Force for eight years and was a member of American Legion 106 George. He and his wife were owners of D's Alterations. George lived a varied and exciting life evidenced by is eclectic work history.

Survivors include his wife, Dianne Adams; daughter, Carolyn (Jason) Seneker, Chattanooga; granddaughter, Elizabeth Seneker; sister, Debbie Joyner, Largo, Fla.; brother, Richard Adams, Kalamazoo, Mich.; stepmother, JoAnn Adams, Pensacola, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Barker was preceded in death by her husband, Nicholas Presley Barker; and sister-in-law, Ruby Lausch.

ROSSVILLE -- James Edwin "Jim" Gill, 67, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2010.

Jim was a cook in several of the Chattanooga area restaurants. He served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.

He was preceded in death by his father, A.O. Gill; and a brother, Bill Gill.

He is survived by his wife, Karen Scoggins Gill; mother, Eva Farmer; children, Jamie Gill, Pam Gill, William Gill and Curtis Gill; stepchildren, Roxanne Folks, Robert Hill; brother, Gary Gill; special cousin, Linda Wilson; and several nieces and nephews.

ACWORTH -- Joseph C. Kemp, 69, died Friday, March 19, 2010.

Mr. Kemp was born in Kentucky and lived in Chattanooga for 30 years. He owned and operated an Independent Insurance Agency. Mr. Kemp was a member of Brainerd United Methodist Church in Chattanooga, where he also sang in the choir. He loved hunting, fishing and loved to work crossword puzzles. He was a founding member and coach of the Brainerd Soccer Association.

Survivors include one son, Andrew H. Kemp and wife, Traci, of Acworth; one sister, Mary Elizabeth "Sissy" Foster, of Bethel Park, Pa.; two brothers, Billy Kemp, of Dallas, Capt. James Kemp, U.S. Navy, of St. Helena Island, S.C.; one grandson, Benjamin Joseph "B.J." Kemp.
