Joan Blaes

Joan Lois Blaes, 80, passed away Wednesday March 24, 2010.

She was born in Hawthorne, N.J., in 1930 and resided in Lake Worth, Fla., throughout her schooling.

After marrying Gene Blaes in 1956, they lived in St. Louis, Mo.; Indianapolis, Ind.; Milwaukee, Wis.; and Philadelphia, Pa., before moving to Chattanooga in 1965.

Joan had a keen interest in quilting and crafts. She was a longtime member of the Crazy Quilters' Guild and several craft groups in the area. In the 1970s and '80s, she enjoyed displaying and selling her craft items at shows in the greater Chattanooga area and several surrounding states.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Gene; and their four children, Tim (Mikki) Blaes, East Ridge, Chris (Arlene) Blaes, Tulsa, Okla., Adam (Donna) Blaes, Chickamauga, Ga., and Julie (Kurt) Schmissrauter, Chattanooga; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral Mass will be held today, March 27, 2010, at 11 a.m. at OLPH Catholic Church with Father Jim Vick officiating.

Immediately following the Mass, a reception will be held in the Parish Life Center.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to OLPH Building Fund or Ladies of Charity Retail Store, 2821 Rossville Blvd., Chattanooga, TN 37407.

Laverne A. Jones, 89, of Chattanooga, died Friday, March 26, 2010.

Pauline "Polly" Smith, 81, of Red Bank, went to heaven, Thursday, March 25, 2010, and was reunited with her husband, Wallace "Wally" Smith.

She was born in Soddy-Daisy and was a 1948 graduate of Red Bank High School.

Survivors include her daughters, Diane (Kerry) White, of East Ridge and Beverly (Jim) Clemmer, of Red Bank; sons, Rick (Nancy) Smith, of Alameda, Calif., and Terry (Karen) Smith, of Biloxi, Miss.; six grandchildren, Sherry Williams, Gerry White, Eric Thomas, John Clemmer, Chris Clemmer and Justin Vandenberg; several great-grandchildren; sisters, Juanita Allen, of Pensacola, Fla., Joann Minnick, of Richmond, Va., and Judith Thompson, of Chattanooga; brother, Dewayne Scott, of Savannah, Ga.

Eleanora Whitener

Eleanora Whitener passed away on Tuesday, March 23, 2010, in Chattanooga.

She was born on July 11, 1913, to Henry and Lizzie Starling, they moved to Chattanooga; where she united at an early age with Pilgrim Rock Baptist Church. She served in the choir for many years. She was the oldest member of Pilgrim Rock Baptist Church.

Proceeded in death by her husband, Eugene Whitener; son, Lonnie Dewitt Whitener; and grandson, Jeffrey Otis Peters.

She leaves to cherish her memories; two daughters, Arma Jean (Andrew Broomfield), Brenda Mae (James) McReynolds; one sister, Edna Wofford; four grandchildren, Charles Eric Reed, Audrenna (Mack) Johnson, Huntsville, AL; Kelcey Jemelle (Lisa) Reed; one foster son, Sherman (Arvella) Tisdale; one foster daughter, Betty Raye Jackson; six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2010, at Pilgrim Rock Baptist Church with Rev. Robert Williams, Elder Richard Smith, Rev. Willie White, Timmy L. Sykes, officiating.

The body will lie in state one hour prior to services at the church.

Interment at 2 p.m. Monday, March 29, at National Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon today at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.

Kimberly Mackie Young, 40, of Soddy-Daisy, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2010.

Kimberly was an employee of Red Bank Bi-Lo for the past nine years. She was of Church of God faith and was a very kind and loving person to her family and friends.

Survivors include her son, Nathan Young; daughter, Ashley Young; grandson, Zackery Fowler; parents, Alvin and Reba Mackie; brother, Daryl Mackie; sister, Holly (Chris) Releford; nephews, Daryl Lee Mackie Jr., Arron Mackie and Tyler Releford and niece, Brooke Releford.

Charlotte Abney

LaFAYETTE -- Charlotte Elizabeth Abney, 88, died Friday, March 26, 2010, in a local health care facility.

She was a native of Barney, Ga., and a longtime resident of North Georgia. She attended Middle Georgia College where she met Ross Abney. After they were married, she supported her husband in the family business, Abney's Department Store. Many company employees and salesmen enjoyed her southern hospitality and cooking. Her home was always open to people of all ages and was a second home to many of her children's friends.

Mrs. Abney was active in school activities involving her children, serving as president of the PTA and working with the LaFayette Band Boosters. Along with her husband, she was very involved with LaFayette Little League and served as Den Mother for the Cub Scouts.

She was a very active member of LaFayette First Baptist Church for many years sharing her Christian love and knowledge of the Bible with many young women in the community. She taught Sunday School for over 50 years to women of all ages and hosted a Bible Study in her home. Her concern for the elderly kept her busy volunteering at Shepherd Hills Nursing Home for many years. Mrs. Abney also worked with the less fortunate, seeking to provide for their many needs such as clothes, food, medicine, and financial assistance.

She received the Beta Sigma Phi Deserving Citizen Award and the LaFayette Chamber of Commerce Distinguished Service Award. Mrs. Abney was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Louis Abney, and parents, Paris and Ethel Carter Culpepper.

Survivors are sons, Randy (Carolyn) Abney, Athens, Ga., Andy (Leslie) Abney, Greenville, S.C.; daughter, Sandy (John) Shadden, Chattanooga; sister, Mary Ruth Holleman, Smyrna, Ga.; grandchildren, Laura Wilhoite, Renee Musick, Adam Abney, Brandon Abney, Nicholas Shadden and Catie Shadden; six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of LaFayette with Dr. Warren Moorehead and Dr. Todd Gaddis officiating.

Interment in LaFayette City Cemetery.

Lonnie Cripps

CHICKAMAUGA -- Lonnie Allen Cripps, 91, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2010.

He was born in Smithville, Tenn., to the late Lemuel P. and Lela Ann Braswell Cripps. He retired from Combustion Engineering and had owned and operated Lonnie's Grill in Chickamauga in the 1950s. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Chickamauga. He was a member of Crawfish Springs Masonic Lodge F&AM #300 and the Masonic York Rite Bodies along with the Marthada Chapter of the Eastern Star. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee with the 112th Division. He was a member of the Chickamauga Post American Legion.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, James Cripps, Elmer "Frog" Cripps; and his sisters, Mary E. Messimer, Bessie Havner, Lessie Watson and Gertrude Higgins.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years, June Liner Cripps of Chickamauga; son, David A. and Doris Cripps, of Chickamauga; brother, Marshall "Red" Cripps, of Grovetown, Ga.; grandchildren, Sheila Jones, Michael Cripps and Kristy Cripps Edwards all of Rock Spring, Ga.; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends today from 2-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m., and Sunday morning prior to the service.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2010 in the chapel with the Rev. Chris Morgan officiating.

Interment will follow in Chickamauga Cemetery, Chickamauga.

HIGH POINT -- Lois Ellen Haney Hixon, 72, passed away Friday, March 26, 2010.

She was born in St. Elmo to the late James Millard Haney and Laura Mae Johnson Haney. She was a lifelong resident of the High Point community and a member of Lookout Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing and cross-stitching.

She is preceded in death by her brother, James Neal Haney.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Richard Henry Hixon Jr., of High Point; daughters and sons-in-law, Annette and Joe Ross of Tunnel Hill, Ga., Sandra and Darren Rogers, of High Point; grandchildren, Amber Rogers, Katie and Ken Ross, several nieces and nephews.

ROSSVILLE -- Brenda Arnold McNabb, 55, passed away Thursday, March 25, 2010.

She had lived in the North Georgia area for most of her life and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents, J.W. and Hattie Jean Thomas; and one son, Little Tommy McNabb.

Survivors include two children, Tammy McNabb and Glenn McNabb; loving companion, Ronald Arnold; sister, Rebecca Sisk; brother, Jimmy Thomas; granddaughter, Alina Belle McNabb, all of Rossville; and several nieces and nephews.

Sadie Nelson

ROSSVILLE -- Sadie Robinson Nelson, 94, passed away on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at the home of her daughter in Soddy-Daisy.

A native of Lewisburg, Tenn., she had lived most of her life in the Chattanooga and north Georgia area where she was a member of McFarland United Methodist Church, the Anchor Sunday School Class, and a past member of the choir. She retired in 1984 from Lovemans as a buyer for the Millinery Department with over ten years of service. Mrs. Nelson was also a volunteer with the Rossville Girls Club, and during World War II she was a member of the Chattanooga Civilian Sharp Shooters who were asked to defend Chattanooga if ever under attack.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Nelson; parents, T.A. and Margaret Robinson; one sister; and three brothers.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Starlan & Cindy Nelson of Van Buren, AR; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Terrence Murray of Soddy Daisy; grandchildren, Josh (Laura) Walker, Lindsey (Colt) Dockery, Emily and Elizabeth Nelson; great-grandchildren, Brayden Walker & Korbyn Dockery; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, March 31, at 1 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery with Rev. Matt Hampton officiating.

TRENTON -- Sarah Jane Parson, 73, died Thursday, March 25, 2010.

She grew up in Flat Rock, Ala., and was known to everyone as mom and granny.

She was preceded in death by her son, Kenny McFall; brother, Johnny Parson; sister, Martha Parson, parents Pledis Parson and Pearlie Monningham.

She is survived by daughter Kathline (Eddie) Baslar; son, Donald (Letitia) McFall; son, Gary Wayne (Tabatha) McFall; daughter, Linda (Bobby) Morgan. Grandchildren, Matthew and Patricia (Sissy) York, Curt Serront, Troy, Garrett McFall, Christian Raines, Whitney Clarity, Kelly McFall, Sebastian and Kaythe Bedwell, Bobby, Shane, and Samantha Baslar; brother, Winston Parson, sister Ruby Newsone, Several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

LaFAYETTE -- Melissa Jane Sylar, 62, died Thursday, March 25, 2010.

She was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church. Other than her family, one true love of Melissa's was visiting flea markets and yard sales.

Survivors include her husband, Bill Sylar; son, Jason Lewis, both of Lafayette; sister, Pat Adams, Lawrenceville, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was born to the late Charles Harmon and Theresa Jo Marshall on Aug. 9, 1956 in Chattanooga. She attended Wesleyan Church and worked as a truck driver for over 12 years.

She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Michelle Irene Henson.

Survivors include her husband, Jimmy Williams, of Ringgold; two daughters and son-in-law, Kimberly and Shayne Hooper, Christy Lolley; son, James Williams Jr., all of Ringgold; grandchildren, Private First Class Joseph Meeks, Brandon Meeks, Nicole Meeks, Paige Hooper and Jeffery Bowen Jr.; brothers-in-law and spouses, John and Diane Williams and Bobby and Myrna Scudgins, of Rossville; uncle and aunt, Buddy and Joyce Overby, of Ringgold, several cousins, nieces, nephews; and her beloved Chihuahua, Brandy.

CORYDON, Ky. -- Darlene "Dee" Robertson, 75, died at 9:18 a.m. Thursday, March 25, 2010, at Methodist Hospital in Henderson, Ky.

She was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church. Dee retired from Henderson County High School, where she worked in the cafeteria. For more than 20 years, she also worked at O'Daniel's Flower Shop in Henderson, Ky. She was a member of Daughters of the American Revolution.

She was preceded in death by a husband, Dennis McEuen, who died in 1970, and by her parents, Aaron and Ella June Patrick Wyckoff.

Survivors include her husband of 31 years, Roger Robertson; one daughter, Denise Southard and her husband, John, of Geneva, Ky.; two sons, Bob McEuen and his wife, Katheryne, of Chattanooga, and Bryan McEuen, of Sturgis, Ky.; five grandchildren, Hannah McEuen, Todd McEuen, Jeremy McEuen, Elizabeth Stone, and Jama Parrish; and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home in Henderson, Ky. Father J. Edward Bradley will officiate.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Freedom Cemetery in Marion, Ky.

Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday and until service time Monday at the funeral home.
