Ex-police officer seeks school board seat

His name is Andrew Mullins, but he likes to be called Andy.

The Aflac Insurance consultant and former Chattanooga police officer is running for the District 8 county school board seat and promises to bring professional, Christian leadership to the job if elected.

"So many people are not professionals and not acting like Christians," Mr. Mullins said. "Too many times, things are under the table. I think everything should be above board and open."

Mr. Mullins said most voters don't realize that decisions made by school board members will have a large impact on Hamilton County.

The former owner of Pioneer Sports & Services Inc. on Ringgold Road, he attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., and obtained a bachelor's degree in history and law. He also attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and is working toward a degree in criminal justice.

"One of my main concerns is safe and secure schools, being a former police officer," he said. "As a police officer, we made several runs to local schools. We need to protect the administration and staff."

Tom Barrow, a supporter of Mr. Mullins, said he's known him for about 15 years and thinks Mr. Mullins' experience with the school system as a parent makes him a logical choice for the job.

"Andrew has a good business head on him," Mr. Barrow said. "He has a lot of patience, a lot of knowledge and a lot of desire to help the teachers. I think he's the kind of citizen we need on our school board."

The general election is scheduled for Aug. 5.
